A Date with Myself

Today is the day that everyone celebrates love. Love for their partners, for their children, and of course, their pets.

Maybe today could also be about love for ourselves. In therapy, you’ll hear therapists talk a lot about “self care” which means doing things that make you happy, less stressed and making sure you are also on your priority list.

Today we show others how much they mean to us, how worthy they are of our love, how much they deserve love. When is the last time you showed yourself all of those things ?

You mean so much. You are worthy of love. You deserve love.

Many people often make the mistake of setting a very high expectation for this day. “I bet my husband isn’t picking up my phone calls because he is working on my surprise for tonight”, or “if my girlfriend really loved me, she would know that I want a new watch for Valentine’s Day”. A part of treating yourself well and taking care of yourself is making these kinds of expectations known to those that love you.

We teach people how to treat us.

It may not be the most romantic conversation, but it will save you from feelings of resentment, unworthiness, and contempt.

So today, love yourself so that you can love others.
