5 Tips for healthier Social Media use

So many of us view our time browsing social media as an “escape”. To an extent, that’s exactly what it is. It is our time to disassociate from our hectic lives and the toddler screaming in our face. But what you are consuming on social media matters. So here are my 5 tips for healthier social media use:

  1. Take an inventory of what you are consuming

What social media outlets are you currently using? Youtube, pinterest, instagram, tiktoc, facebook, etc…

  1. If it makes you feel bad, get rid of it.

Are you looking at things that make you feel good, inspired, or happy? Are you looking at things that make you feel numb (this would be dissociation)? OR are you looking at things that make you feel like you could be doing a better job, or that you currently aren’t doing enough? Think about the social media posts from that mom friend who seems to have it all together, or the pinterest post about the perfect and easy homemade dinner. If what you are looking at brings you joy – keep it! If what you are looking at gives you that numbing sensation, no worries! BUT if what you are consuming makes you feel down or sad about yourself or your situation, consider letting it go.

  1. Give yourself grace.

Give yourself some grace when it comes to how you spend your down time. We all need time to ourselves and sometimes that may mean we spend time scrolling through mind numbing youtube shorts. Giving yourself grace means allowing your body the time and space it needs to be numb. Most likely you are already overstimulated as it is!

  1. Give yourself a time limit.

Track how much time you’re spending on social media. If you feel comfortable with that amount of time, then stick with it! If not, then give yourself an amount of time that feels appropriate for you. We give our kids time limits in front of screens because we know the value other activities have on their tiny brains! Why not give ourselves the same?

  1. Identify other sources of self care.

Finally, jot down some other self care tools you can utilize in addition to, or instead of social media. (Not sure what actually qualifies as self-care? Stay tuned for the next blog post).

I hope these tips help you figure out how to make the most of your time on social media!
