Wishing Away Happiness

The summer is filling up fast. Trips and birthday parties, cook-outs and get togethers, there are lots of things to look forward to.

I am a planner. I like to be organized and prepared. So when I look at my calendar filed with lots of fun activities, I also see packing lists, grocery lists, and endless To Do items. Even though I am looking forward to those events it’s easy to get caught up in the logistics of it all. Easy to lose sight of the true purpose: being mindful of time together with family and friends. It’s easy to wish away that happiness waiting for the next big event.

Journaling everyday has helped me stay present in the moment. When one event passes, to not rush into the next one. My journal gives me the opportunity to slow down and reflect. I’ve heard the saying the experience is the best teacher, but I am more apt to agree with an altered version of that quote: reflected experience is the best teacher.

Journals allow us to think through problems, weigh pros and cons, decide to act differently next time, sort through feelings, be mindful and present and reflect on our experience.

My journal reminds me that even the slow or mundane days can bring joy, peace, fun or immense happiness. I don’t have to wait for that big summer trip to be happy.

How do you find ways to be happy on regular mundane days?

How do you remind yourself to be present in those moments?

How do you reflect on past experience?
